Some Healthful Tips to Prevent Dry and Cracked FeetBY: Evelyn Lalisan | Category: Health | Submitted: 2010-04-18 08:07:13
Your feet are one of the most abused parts of your body. You can see and feel the abuse you do to your feet when you start to feel some pain and discomfort. One of the most common problems of feet are due to dryness causing them to crack which in turn makes you uncomfortable and experience some aches as well. Some factors that cause cracked feet are due to dehydration and obesity. The excess weight places more force on the feet and heels. At times, open-backed shoes may also cause dryness and cracked feet due to the absence of ample support for the fat pad underneath the feet. Regardless of causes, you can still help prevent dry and cracked feet by giving your feet some tender loving care. This is ably done by a good foot soak that would help increase circulation, get rid of bacteria, moisturize your feet and reduce further feet problems for you. Make use of a pumice stone and rub it on your cracked heels while dry. This would help get rid of dead skin cells. Pour warm water into the foot basin just enough to cover your feet. Add ½ cup of Dead Sea or Epsom salts into the water. The salts would increase circulation and help heal the feet. Let your feet soak for about 10 minutes. Remove one foot and rub the pumice stone on the cracked areas; do the same with the other foot as well. Rub each foot for about 3 minutes. Then place your feet back into the foot basin and soak for another 10 minutes. Then do the same rubbing of each foot again using the pumice stone. Then use a towel to completely dry your feet. You can apply moisturizer like olive oil, petroleum jelly or vegetable oil to your feet. Massage well into the cracked areas of the feet. After massaging with any of the moisturizers, wear thick cotton socks on the feet overnight to allow moisturizer to settle into the skin. You can have a foot soak once a day for about a week. You would see positive results soon enough. If not, try to do it for another week. If there is still no improvement, then you would have to see your doctor for proper treatment. As a matter of precaution, if you have a medical condition like diabetes or any circulatory problems, check with your doctor first before doing the foot soak. A medical condition may cause some discomfort or sensation during foot soak, so it would be better to be careful. Having dry and cracked feet is a health problem, though it may not be as serious as other medical conditions. Nevertheless, it would still be a wise decision to prevent dry and cracked feet so you would just be totally fit and healthy as you can be.
