Some Helpful Tips in Accepting CriticismBY: Evelyn Lalisan | Category: Self-Improvement | Submitted: 2010-03-06 20:09:59
There comes a time when we are told something that may not be to our liking. These may be comments or opinions that may show disapproval or praise in what we have said, what we have written or what ever else that we have done to be given such attention from people who may matter in our life, or in some cases they don't. This is what may be referred to as criticism. It may be something that may happen in our life, that you may be criticized over something. How do you react to it? Of course, it goes without saying that you don't want to be criticized, nobody does in actuality. The normal reactions you may have at being criticized is that you may feel embarrassed, humiliated and some other negative emotions that you may have in you. However, you must learn how to accept criticism. You must learn how to deal with it in a more positive way. Doing so would help you go through life with less pain and anguish. It is a good opportunity to learn how to deal with criticism and be able to use it as an essential life tool to overcome challenges that life has to offer. Here's how : Always remember to act in response to the suggestions made, and not to the manner of how the criticism was done. Sometimes, the criticism may sound provoking or offensive to you. But then it is not meant to be that way, so you must be on the alert to separate that kind of feeling in you. Try to differentiate the criticism from the manner it was said. Try to separate your emotions and instead learn from the valuable suggestions that may be found underneath the criticism. Try to appreciate criticism. Remember that you can learn something from it so you might as well value its importance. Life is not all about praises and accepting kind words of admiration; rather it is a mix of feeling miserable and feeling rejection especially when you are criticized. You must value criticism because it can be constructive and it can help you become stronger and progress securely in life. Criticism should not be taken personally. This has always been a main problem. Some people take offense because they think that criticisms are directly about them. Take criticism in stride and always look for the positive side of it. You must be able to differentiate false criticism. There may be times that you may be criticized for no reason at all and it could hurt your feelings. If this is the case, you must as well ignore the criticism and remain quiet. This is better than responding and trying to defend yourself because, remember in the first place there was no justification for the criticism, it was baseless and unreasonable. You are doing yourself a great favor by just totally disregarding it and not wasting your time and energy. Don't give it any importance because it isn't. Give yourself the self-worth that people would learn to respect. Don't respond to the criticism too quickly. Take hold of your feelings or emotions, think first and maintain your sense of being cool and patient. Try to reflect about the criticism before saying or reacting to it. Always remember to stay calm, focused and reasonable. Always remember to smile. This is good way to offset negative feelings and it would help you relax. Smiling your way into a criticism or out of it may give a sense of positivity in you and a sense of discomfort to your aggravator. Wouldn't that be great that you won one over the other person and that the criticism did not offend you in any way, instead it backfired at the other person? At least, that's one way of showing them that you can take criticism in any way!
