If you like to give your pet some tasty treats for being good and behaved you must know the right treats to give them. You must not conclude that whatever is good for you must also be good for your pet. As there are some foods that may be unhealthy for you, think that there are also unhealthy foods that may harm your pets. Not only are some foods unhealthy, they may also be dangerous and lethal to your pets. These are a few of them.

Chocolate and Coffee

You didn't really know about this, did you? Well, chocolate may be a tasty treat for you but it can be lethal to your pet. The high fat content, caffeine and other stimulants contained in coffee and chocolate affect the nervous system. Dark chocolate contains high concentrates of stimulants. Coffee made from cacao beans is likewise rich in stimulants. When consumed in great amounts your pet would have the following symptoms such as restlessness, vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, increased urination, seizure, too much panting, muscle spasms, increased heart rate and blood pressure.

Alcohol

Of course you don't give this to your pet. In case your pet has consumed even only small amounts of it, the effect is still dangerous. Any alcoholic beverages may have lethal effects to your pet. The signs to be looked out for are too much excitement, sudden change in behavior, loss of equilibrium, increased urination, depression, lower respiratory rate, cardiac arrest that may lead to death.

Artificial Sweetener

The artificial sweetener known as xylitol is contained in a lot of sugar-free products like candy and bubble gum. This may not have any effect to you but your pet would have reverse reactions to it. These reactions would be signs of weakness, loss of coordination, tiredness, collapse, seizure and drop in blood sugar.

All these indicators can be observed in your pet about 30 minutes after eating any of these products and these symptoms may go on for many hours. If your pet has eaten any of these foods you must take your pet to the vet right away. The earlier the vet checks your pet of these symptoms the better the chances of its recovery.
