You missed my birthday last week...the text message came as a bombshell on me. What? how could I? Yet again, I had missed out a close friend's special day in the last few days. I sat and wondered, what had suddenly caused the malfunctioning in my memory, and then it suddenly dawned-No more facebook birthday reminders to save you the trouble of remembering. Gone are the days, when a quick scan of the home page, would reveal the ins and outs, what's hot and what's not for the busy, hectic-scheduled Pakistanis. Technology had, once again, been used for the unacceptable, and failed to serve the purpose of its creation, and for this time, a strong vehement action was simply unavoidable. The blasphemous content published on the popular social networking site had caused a stir among the entire Muslim community of the world. It had sparked a heated conflict between the major beliefs of the world, and had brought an end to the tolerance of the Muslim world over the oppression, brutality and disrespect for the faithful followers of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W).As a consequence of the huge protests staged by the Muslims in Pakistan, the Government immediately resorted to imposing a ban on the social networking site-Facebook, followed by a similar ban on other web pages containing links to the blasphemous content. Amidst the hues and cries of some addicted-to-virtual-existence of our nation, I wonder if our perception towards the entire blasphemy saga has actually served its purpose. If some of us fail to realize the evil consequence of adhering to silent treatment of the heinous crime of blasphemy, then surely we are in waiting of the wrath of the Almighty. Islam enjoins brotherhood, peace and respect for all, but all the same, attempts to mock the beliefs and sanctity of our religion, shall never be tolerated. At the end, for all my fellow Pakistanis finding it hard to swallow a world without facebook and YouTube, how do you plan to stand before your Lord on the Day of Judgement in hope of mercy and forgiveness when you were not ready to defend His message in this living?
