The internet is a very powerful tool of information. Whatever you write about yourself or anything else is accessed by other internet buffs. It is just a matter of practicality that you have to protect your self online. The internet which is also dominated by popular social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and other similar sites are sources where information about you can be found. If you want to protect yourself online you must be able to follow these easy methods.

1. Always Guard Your Personal Information
Don't give out personal details of your account or personal information about you on the internet. If you encounter such request think hard before agreeing to give out personal details about you such as your SSS card number, home addresses and other vital information about yourself. Be aware of sites which you are interested in that ask personal details about you and check them out first if they are legitimate or not.

2. Don't overdo sharing of your personal details in social media networks like Twitter, Facebook and other similar sites. You must not share your birthdates, your mother's maiden name or other important information that would easily identify you.

3. Keep updated about keeping your computer safe from hacking or getting virus. You can have anti-virus software installed on your computer, add more security measures and install software that is updated. Keep your web browser in its latest version.

4. Safeguard your passwords. Make them hard and distinct so no one can access them easily. Avoid accessing secure websites via public Wi-Fi.

5. Be Careful of Scammers - Fake Online Contests and Sweepstakes
If you encounter these, they are likely going to ask for your personal details before awarding your 'prize'. Be on the alert that these sites may be spurious and false as well.
Remember to check them out first and you can ask more information by requesting details of the contest and the sponsors in charge of them. If you get no response, then you can be sure that these are just shams to mislead you.

6. Go paperless and use online services
Avail the use of electronic statements, pay your bills online and use direct deposit. You would lessen the risk of mail theft.

7. Be Aware of Work at Home Scams
Always remember to check first and do your research about work at home offers. If you encounter offers that you would earn big money if you agree to ship out some goods to a certain address or if you agree that some goods would be shipped to you, think again. You may be involving yourself to some kind of fraud and you would become the victim and the offender at the same time.

8. Remember to ask your bank about their security measures and how they are protecting your accounts. Ask about the bank's liability protection for credit and debit cards and online transactions. It pays to know about them in case you encounter these problems.

9. Always check and monitor your finances
Remember to carefully scrutinize your bank and credit card accounts regularly. Keep yourself updated by signing up for alerts to be sent via email or mobile phone in case problems arise. The major card credit bureaus offer free credit reports through their site -annualcreditreport.com. There are other means that offer services for a fee to closely monitor and do extensive checking on personal identity records, online transactions, credit cards and other similar information, and you can avail of them, too.

10. Inform the Authorities if you are a victim of online fraud.
The right thing to do if you become a victim is to immediately get in touch with the authorities. You can avail of the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) which is in close alliance with the FBI, The National White Collar Crime Center and the Bureau of Justice Assistance, and then file a report about the details of the fraud. Also remember to make a report to your local police. It helps to report these crimes so that these offenders would get arrested.

Always protect important and personal details of yourself. You can still join social media networks but just don't get too involved in sharing too much information of you and your family. Too many information about you would call too much attention and you might find yourself getting unwanted emails from people you don't know. Remember that the internet is a new technology that has many advantages; unfortunately some scrupulous people could take advantage of it to use it against you.
