Test Tube Babies and Ethical ConcernsBY: Anisa Author | Category: Issues | Submitted: 2010-07-10 05:22:16
When test tube babies became possible, two opinions came in view: Robert George, the director of the James Madison Program and Professor of Jurisprudence at Princeton University was of opinion that in vitro fertilization (IVF) solved the problem of infertility as he said "But nevertheless, a lot of people were very enthusiastic and saw this as solving a terrible problem. And infertility certainly is a terrible problem, terrible burden for people to have to bear" Whereas, Arthur Caplan, Professor of Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania recognized having test tube babies as a drastic change in laws of nature as he said, "The day Louise Brown got made was the day that a core aspect of human life, reproduction, moved from a mystery to a technology, moved from something that we were in awe of to something that we manipulate" , he continued "what used to be something that most of our ancestors thought of as determined by God or the gods, all of a sudden got determined by a person or two people about when and how to have a kid." Poking into the matters of nature to solve the issue of infertility and disturbing the natural way of having babies with sex is something weird. No doubt IVF has solved the issue of infertility but with that it has generated many other concerns that are more dangerous than we can think. It has allowed babies to be produced just like a product which can be produced on the will of the human and with the features human want to see in it. Some time later we can even expect various quality checks to be applied to make sure the final product, the baby is as per the choice of the parents. There is every possibility that if this IVF trend is promoted positively we become so used to having babies in technical manner that marriage would be no more required. Moreover having perfect babies with zero defects by selecting their features and characteristics in advance is also enough to destroy the balance of the world in which we can find people with all levels and types. But if we have the option to have perfect babies, the world with perfect unnaturalness and monotony is not far away. Another concern about test tube baby is health. If we have many successful cases of having test tube babies, there are also instances of failures. What if the baby produced in vitro has defects, is retarded or is unhealthy. We just can't play with a life saying it some 'technology mistake.' We have no right to give birth to a life unnaturally, in a way it is not meant to be produced. 'Human embryo in a dish' may have many health problems and it may be possible that their defects will come in front some time later in their life; we just can't say anything about it right now. May be they have some defects in reproduction too or will the supporters of test tube babies would suggest them to have a test tube baby and produce a life similar to their own. There are many other social concerns to it as well. If producing baby is so easy there is no need to kidnap babies, people will just produce one of their own, and why one they can have as many as they like. Moreover, another concern is that what about those embryos that got produced but can't survive till the time they are placed again in the mother's womb. Is it ethical to destroy life experimenting which embryo can survive and can be implanted properly? Absolutely no, these procedures are just deteriorating the value of human life. Another important issue is the relation of test tube babies to other humans. First thing in this aspect is that who will be the parents of in vitro babies, the one who have donated the sperm and egg or the one who have nourished the child in her womb for nine months? Secondly, how they will relate to this world? What will be there right? Will they be even categorized as humans or just the products? It is better not to play with nature's will and let the procedure of reproduction as it was since ever. In old ages there used to be couples who can't have kids and they bear with it as it is something natural and may be important for the balance of the world. They have never tried such unnatural ways throughout their lives, so why people think it too important now destroying the whole universal setup.
