The Benefits of Having PetsBY: Guest User | Category: Pets | Submitted: 2010-02-24 19:50:03
'Petsmart: Where pets are family.' This slogan encapsulates the way that we feel about our pets. One of the philosophies (and marketing techniques) of Petsmart is to treat pets as part of the family, and to change their terminology from 'pet owners' to 'pet parents.' While it may seem like a simple change, it makes a world of difference in the minds of their customers. Many people consider their pets as part of the family. It's not enough just to have their pets' presence noted; they have to feel like their pets are loved by others as much as the owner loves them. It makes sense that we love our pets so much. When we spend so much time and money caring for something (or someone), it's natural to become invested in that thing. It also helps that your dog runs up to you excitedly when you get home or that your cat likes to sit in your lap until all hours of the night. But having a pet isn't just of benefit to the animal; it also benefits the pet parents in many ways. There are many health benefits to having pets. Studies have shown that pet parents are less stressed, happier, and enjoy an overall better quality of life (based on a self-assessment) than people who don't have pets. The impact of stress on people has been highly documented, and pet parents reap the health benefits of this reality. Pets also provide secondary benefits in regard to the safety of the home. Though some of you may be thinking about the pots that your dog broke, this safety extends beyond the beauty of your garden. Interviews of recently released criminals have shown some of the things that they steer clear from when they are choosing a target. One of these things is a loud or large dog. If you have smaller animals, they may also provide some level of protection for your home when you go on vacation. Instead of scaring burglars away due to their size and ferocity, small dogs and cats require people to housesit for you. Even if that person only comes to the house once or twice a day, their presence coupled with an unpredictable schedule will make your home look like a less-enticing target. Another way that pets benefit you and your family is by increasing your health. Though this may seem like an oxymoron, having a pet that plays both outside and inside can slowly introduce various germs into your home. These small introductions give your immune system a chance to develop the right defenses against the sicknesses that could be formed. In the long term, this will give your family greater health. For younger children, introducing pets to them will reduce the likelihood of them developing allergies later in life. Pets also help people develop social skills and a sense of responsibility. Even simple tasks like putting the dog's food in his bowl give children a sense that they have something that they are responsible for something. It also helps the children develop a sense of gratitude for the things that their parents do for them. Overall, all of these benefits pale in comparison to the joy it is to have a new member of the family.
