The City That Never Sleeps - Mumbai.BY: reshma rohra | Category: Travel | Submitted: 2011-02-25 05:15:17
Mumbai, India's financial capital, the capital city of Maharashtra state, a home to approximately 20.5 million Indians and the world's second most populous city, is a place where life never even pauses for a second. People of Mumbai who are also known as the Mumbaites or the Mumbaikars or the Mumbaiyas are always working, whether there is a terrorist attack or a natural calamity, they have a never say die spirit, life here runs at a very fast pace one cannot just stand and stare here. People say it's a city where all your dreams come true, there truly must be something magical about this city that is why such things are being said about Mumbai. A big number of people migrate to Mumbai every year with the view of finding jobs, building their careers and settling their businesses. Mumbai is the metropolis of great financial importance. Many significant financial institutions have their cardinal offices here like Bombay stock exchange (BSE), reserve bank of India, and many other corporate finance houses hence Mumbai is termed as the commercial capital of the country. BSE is located at the Dalal street which is the busiest street of the city and is similar to the Wall street in London. Apart from the financial and corporate biggies, the very famous Indian film industry, commonly known as bollywood, is majorly situated in Mumbai, to be precise one third of the Indian film industry is concentrated in Mumbai and the rest is spread across the northern, western and the southern regions. Mumbai people love entertainment more than anyone! As a fact majority of the migrants, who come to Mumbai to make it big, wish to flourish in this sector. Mumbai is a picturesque city. Life can be seen in all its hues and shades here. From sky scrapers, bungalows and row houses to small buildings, chawls and slums, Mumbai has embraced all of these. On one hand there are sea sides having a marvelous view like Marine Drive popularly known as the Queens necklace, the Worli Sea-face, Bandra Bandstand that are a manifestation of calmness and serenity while on the a other hand there is Chowpatty and Juhu beach that are bursting with life and excitement. All these places are a must visit in Mumbai. Also i would like to make a special mention of the food out here, the mumbaites are complete foodies, they survive on fast food. The most famous dishes include vada pav, sev puri, bhel puri, paani puri, pav bhaji, frankies and rolls. The unusual combinations in which the south indian food is served here absolutely fit in the eating list and also we cannot ignore the chinese stalls and various other junk stalls which surely are worth a bite. If food is the first love of the Mumbaites then shopping certainly ranks number two. Mumbai is a foodies and a shoppers paradise. From elite malls and branded stores to cheap but good street side shops all are invariably flocked with shoppers. When talking of street shopping Colaba Causeway, Bandra Linking Road, Hill Road and Fashion Street are hot favorites. And what can i say about the branded stuff, almost all the international brands have their outlets here, it's like you name it and Mumbai has it! Mumbai clearly has all the attributes of an urban city and its speeding even more towards westernization. The night life here is mindboggling there are many cool clubs, pubs, and discs here, a few popular amongst them are Enigma, Velocity, Not just jazz by the bay, Bombay blue, Insomnia, Fire and ice etc. I won't hesitate to address Mumbai as the most happening city in India. Though the western culture is spreading its wings here but the roots are still highly Indian. Mumbaikars are god fearing people and therefore all the temples, gurudrwaras, churches and mosques are always crowded. The Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai is visited by a big number of devotees of Lord Ganesha. Also there is the marvelous Haji Ali Dargah that rises from the Arabian Sea which is a popular pilgrim destination .Both these holy places are a big tourist attraction too. Apart from these, the Mount Mary Church, the Hare Rama Hare Krishna Temple and plenty of jain temples and gurudwaras also form an important part of the city. As a fact Mumbai has derived its name from the Goddess Mumba Devi who is enshrined in the splendid Mumba Devi temple. The grandeur celebration of all the festivals in Mumbai is very eye pleasing. Ganesh chaturthi is the most celebrated festival in Mumbai. One thing that is depicted explicitly by all this is the unity in diversity of people from different castes and communities here. Mumbai is a mini India in itself with people from different religions and having different traditional values come together and stay cordially. No doubt sometimes there are communal differences but that exists in every city, state and country, as they say where there are two or more vessels they are bound to clash and make noise. Anyway to conclude I would say Mumbai is a city that teaches you to live life to the fullest. It can give you all sort of experiences success, failure, happiness, sadness, belongingness, loneliness, rage, disappointment, excitement, fun and frolic, peace and love. This magical city of Mumbai although never sleeps but is full of dreams. So the people who live here should be proud to be a part of this place and those who don't should surely visit Mumbai once in their life time because this city is one hell of an experience.
