Pictures of baby animals enjoys lots of fanfare. Everybody loves them; those who don't are shunned by society. These pictures have the same effect as pictures of baby humans, if not greater. Also human beings lose their cuteness with age while animals retain theirs so much longer. For reasons unfathomable, animals can do the most boring thing and be perceived as extremely cute. A human being gets nothing but a laugh, often a cruel one, when he slips and falls down. Imagine that happening to a cute dog. Or try comparing pictures of baby animals sleeping and those of several people sleeping. You would probably question the sanity of the person taking pictures of the snoozing people. But presented with pictures of baby animals sleeping you would at least smile, if not fawning all over them.

This makes it a perfectly acceptable practice for people to upload and create files of baby animal photos, if not extremely popular. There are even whole blogs created and updated, like Cute Overload, solely for the purpose of admiring and adoring pictures of baby animals, be it puppies, kittens, chicks, hamsters and many more.

Some blogs even showcase pictures of baby animals most people won't actually find cute. Pictures of baby snakes, snails and turtles are uploaded, pictures which basically just display the animals looking smaller than their adult versions. On second thought, that is not such a bad idea seeing that everything miniature is almost always cute.

You are familiar with the effect and yet you wonder, what is it about pictures of baby animals, and animals on the whole, that pulls the heart strings of the public? How is it that we are capable of moving on from accidents and murders on the newspaper or TV without a pause and yet become all aflutter and upset when a dog is involved in a traffic accident? These kinds of news are indeed covered extensively to the point of becoming a national tragedy. People express their sympathy and cry for poor Leo as pictures of his last minutes on Earth are flashed on TV and printed on newspaper. No such attention is afforded average human beings, with the exception of celebrities. It seems like being animals come with celebrity status or at least a higher degree of importance.

The bigger the admiration generated by pictures of baby animals, the bigger the irony is observed as stories of cruelty and punishment toward animals are unearthed. It is definitely unfortunate that human beings are perfectly capable of these. We hunt them down for food, for lining coats, additional ingredients in our perfumes and other mundane purposes. Countless experiments use animals as test subjects, to be discarded afterward; sometimes even those who can still pose for pictures of adorable baby animals. The crimes of abusing animals have reached the point where it is necessary to have a special force in the police department to handle such cases. What are the reasons behind all these? When did admiration turn into indifference?

In all fairness, animals are not something to be worship for or to be disregarded as a toy. Appropriate respect is what is due for them. And while we take pleasure in having the pictures of baby animals taken, let's put it in our minds that they, too, should enjoy the animal life they're born with and not for humanly pleasures and amusement.
