'Hooray for Hollywood!' The song dances in our culture's collective memory not only because of the familiar tune, but because of the truth that it reinforces. Hollywood has become almost inextricable from our lives. Even those who don't own televisions are connected to the story lines and celebrities that are created on T.V. by the magazines in the supermarket or the conversations that are carried on around them. Celebrities are held up as role models, fashion plates, and idols. No matter how they gained their status, celebrities are constantly in our faces through billboards, magazines, television, movies, and even seemingly non-related things like disaster relief and political campaigns. Even politicians seem to be seeking celebrity status; Antonio Villaraigosa, the mayor of Los Angeles, was recently a guest star on a soap opera.

Youth seem to be the most impacted by these supposed role models. This may be in part because youth tend to have more discretionary income, and therefore are the target of most advertizing campaigns. Because youth and young adults don't have the financial responsibilities of loans, mortgages, or children, they can spend more money on movies, clothing, and other discretionary items.

Another reason that youth tend to be more impacted by Hollywood is because they don't have the connection to the past that older people have. Older generations have had a chance to experience changes in entertainment and Hollywood. They have a greater understanding of how quickly fads come and go, and therefore tend not to be as connected to following those fads and trends.

Traditionally, role models are people who have done something or who have character that should be emulated. These can be people who are alive and personally connected to you (like your Aunt Gladys) or who are historical figures (like Abraham Lincoln). American culture, however, has moved celebrities into role model status. This started primarily with television and movie stars; people who were seen often and whose personality could be discovered or invented based on the roles that they played.

The advent of reality T.V. gave the "normal" person the opportunity to become a celebrity, but this chance was only given to a select few who were chosen for a series. In the 2000s, YouTube opened the world up to the average person. No longer do you have to be "discovered" by a talent- or casting agent in order to find celebrity status. Now, all you need is a camcorder and internet connection in order to broadcast yourself.

For youth who are trying to emulate celebrities of any kind, these changes have removed restrictions that would normally prohibit lewd or culturally unacceptable behavior. Anybody who can get online can become a role model in the minds of youth, and watching the auditions for talent-finding reality television shows reveals the mindset of many youth. By blurring the line between celebrity based on accomplishments and celebrity based on outrageousness, we are creating a culture that elevates are rewards individuals who intentionally break from the common good in order to advance their own celebrity. And when celebrity is valued more highly than the reason for that celebrity, we risk losing the values most necessary for our survival as a culture, as a nation, and as a people.
