The Simple Fruit Salad - One Dish and Many Varieties for any MenuBY: Jessica Parker | Category: Food | Submitted: 2010-04-06 21:28:23
People are increasingly aware of the direct link between their diet and their health. The eating habits and the menu choices have long term effects and can lead to serious health problems. When children are involved, parents are even more responsible for choosing carefully the menu for the day. A well balanced diet is a must for a healthy life and it is never too early to set a good example of adequate and healthful meals. What makes a healthy diet? The backbone of our nutrition is protein that we can get from legumes, meat, or soy products. Large amounts of fruits and veggies are also a must for fiber, antioxidants, and nutrients. Add to that whole grains and dairy products. Avoid too much fat and keep away from partially hydrogenated oils, saturated and trans fats. That's quite the big picture of a healthy diet. We all know it, and we all strive for it, but it seems to be not so easy to achieve. The main problem is in the fruits and veggie department. Large amounts translate to 5-9 servings per day and that does not sound very inviting. Not to mention that it sounds simply expensive. So the veggies and fruits usually make it on the table only as a side dish such as steamed veggie, baked potato or some dinner salad. And that is healthy food for sure, but it is simply not enough. Adding to our menu a simple fruit salad can be an effective and inexpensive solution. A simple fruit salad has the big advantage of fitting in at any meal of the day. A half-cup serving of fruit goes well in the morning next to a cup of milk and a bowl of whole grain cereal. It goes well at lunch for a dessert and it can nicely end the dinner. And as the name implies, it can be very simple to prepare. The basic simple fruit salad is nothing more than a single fruit. You can decorate that fruit, for instance with a non-diary whipped topping. And it doesn't have to be expensive either. It costs only $2 to prepare a dessert for four people out of a couple of 15-ounce cans of mandarin oranges. You don't have to limit yourself to one fruit at a time. The simple fruit salad can also mix two or three fresh fruits: sliced banana, berries, and orange sections go well together and make for a very colorful salad that the children will surely enjoy. The good thing about the simple fruit salad is that it is filling, but it is quite low in calories and high in fiber. It is thus the dieter's best friend and an ideal way to boost your energy at any time of the day. Or it can be the perfect dessert after a hearty meal, finishing it off with the needed amount of sweetness. Simple fruit salads with a lot of berries are recommended in health conditions characterized by inflammation such as Carpal Tunnel syndrome or arthritis. Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and Marion berries are not only good sources of fiber and high in antioxidants, but also anti-inflammatory. To reduce inflammation in the joints, you can try bing cherries. Fresh or canned or even deep frozen, the berries and the bing cherries can make a fast and simple fruit salad that is good for your health. Blend for instance a cup of low-fat yoghurt with a cup and a half of mixed berries and cherries and you just got yourself a great an healthy lunch. And by the way, that also counts as 3 of your needed 5-9 servings of fruits and veggie for the day. A simple fruit salad can also be made to look classy to fit in on any elegant menu. Just drizzle some Torani(R) syrup, add some finely minced mint, or a scoop of sherbet, frozen yoghurt, or even ice cream. Miniature marshmallows can also be a nice addition. As you can see, a healthy simple fruit salad can come in many varieties and fits just about anywhere in your menu. Just give it a try and the attention that it deserves!
