The modern 3-D animation movies such as Ratatouille or Up brought to the screens a completely different approach to illustration. Older animations based on hand-drawn art, such as Bambi or Pinocchio brought in the 40's an illustration incredible in its complexity of details. In the computer era, the focus of the illustration shifted from intricate detail to the main characteristics that depict the true character of a scene. Old hand-drawn art though remains just as fascinating in its attention to detail that results in illustrations often reminiscent of Dutch Renaissance painters such as Bruegel. And that art becomes again available in modern form as Disney releases its old production from 1937, the Snow White Disney DVD, in high-definition Blu-Ray format.

Children of today are as interested in detail as children have always been. What they are searching for is clear depth, not fussy complexity. And clear depth and mesmerizing detail are exactly what the new high-definition Blu-Ray DVDs are offering. The Snow White Disney DVD does justice to the rich and exceedingly beautiful illustration that was hand-drawn by talented artists so long ago. As we see again the quiet animated scenes with incredible depth of color and clarity, we realize once more that the sense of action does not always have to come from exclusive movement. The gentle movement of creatures on the screen can make such an impact that would be comparable, oddly enough, with that obtained by a car chase.
The length of the Snow White Disney DVD is only a bit more than 80 minutes. When it was released, it was the very first animated feature-length movie and it certainly meant innovation at a time when cartoons were at most 10 minutes long. As people were not used to such long cartoons, Disney chose to have the story unfolding at a slow pace. The illustration is carefully chosen, the colors are always beautiful, vibrant, and very deep, but never strong. Some might criticize the Disney movies for always picturing the protagonists in traditional pre-feminist roles. The Snow White Disney DVD is for sure not an exception given that the first thing that Snow White does in the dwarfs' cottage is to clean the house and prepare the dinner. It is surely hard to see a feminist leaning in this picture, but the tastefully representation of her feminine role does not rule out an inner strength.

The original Snow White Disney DVD appeared in standard definition in 2001. Most of the bonus material that it contained is now available also in Blu-Ray. Unfortunately, there are also a few wonderful extras that did not make it to the Blu-Ray version. On the bright side, there are instead some simple games that would entertain small children and some more coming attractions. The phenomenon that Snow White Disney DVD created when it was released lives on and takes now advantage of the latest technology. With the clarity and sharpness that Blu-Ray offers, it is easier than ever before to understand why Disney still values highly the hand-drawn illustrations.
