The Spanking Approach: Issues on Child DisciplineBY: Guest User | Category: Relationships | Submitted: 2010-03-14 17:15:56
Before disciplining your kids by hitting their bottoms, consider this. A recent US research on a hundred of children was conducted to determine if there is a correlation between spanking and intellectual ability of children. And shocking as it may be, the result revealed that children who are being hit grow up to be not as smart as the children who were not given swift swats to their backside. In the age of super achievers, where it has always been a parent's thrust to make their children extra smart, the result of the study on child discipline might have been an eye opener. But then again, not all parents have the same point of view due to racial and economic factors. Some parents who are not well-educated might also not be aware of the effect of spanking and may be a little harsh in disciplining their children. This is also one of the factors that resulted to lower intelligence of these children. As the subject of the study were randomly selected, the researchers have counter the implication of the result by claiming that the children chosen for the study did not come from carefully selected and comparable social and economic levels. Hence, they claim that there is a significant link between the two, but did not suggest that the beating approach certainly cause a lower intelligence aptitude. The study was done on 1,500 children ages from two to nine. The children were selected from a racial make that would represent that whole country. At the end of the four year study, result have shown that children who are being disciplined through hitting were four points lower than the other children as based through an IQ test. For one, the after effect of child discipline could not be manifested over four years or so. It may take decades for the study to really prove anything on child discipline and its consequence on the behavior and mental aptitude of children. In addition, the researchers might want to consider having a larger number of children an respondents of the study, in order to have a better grasp of the social and economic factors that might affect the result of the child discipline research. Nevertheless, the research still has imperfections, and has to be evaluated further to strengthen the initial result. The researchers, therefore, recommended that similar studies, focusing on different child discipline factors, should be conducted in the future. Hence, given the shocking outcome the study have shown, the researchers have provided a simple yet eye-opening explanations for the low IQ performance of the spanked children; that hitting as a form of child discipline down the child's self-esteem puts them off, and introduce them to a world of violence. The child learning process, as a result, slows down. Children also deserve the right to have a friendly and fair environment. And in that case, we play a major role in imposing the appropriate child discipline. And as parents, it is also our duty to provide a home to our children which is free from violence and cruelty.
