Things to Talk About on a First DateBY: Deidre Dorsett | Category: Relationships | Submitted: 2010-06-29 12:40:37
The first date can be hard. We know all about that. That is why you might need some conversation starters. That is where we come in to help. Here we will help you to find those things to start talking about on that first date so there isn't that awkward silence. The first thing that you don't want to talk about is the relationships that haven't worked in the past. The past should be the past. The reason that this is a bad idea is that you start comparing the date you are out with right now and so forth. Just avoid this topic. Talk about current events. People like this. It's not too personal yet, it's something interesting. This helps you to get an idea about how your date feels about certain things as well. This is something that is nice. While we are talking about getting an idea about what they like and don't like you might want to get a sense about what they find entertaining. For instance, what are their hobbies? What sort of movies to they like to watch. If you aren't familiar with something, then ask them to elaborate on it. If this is the first date, you might wan to know about their family. Sometimes, we learn a little too late that something might be a touchy subject. Maybe dad wasn't in the picture so the idea of fathers is something they don't like to talk about. Maybe mom died of cancer. All of this is good to know. So, asking them to talk about their family is something that you might want them to do. However, you don't want to stay on the topic too much. You aren't there to learn about their family. You are dating them after all. Now, people will tell you to stay away from religion and politics. This is somewhat of a good piece of advice. you don't want to get into the heated topics of if abortion is right or wrong or what they feel about gun control. Make sure you save these conversations for a later date. Ask about their job. Many people want to talk about that. You could be the venting source they need to tell the things that they keep to themselves. Again, make sure that this isn't your whole conversation either. When you are talking when you are on a date, both of you should be doing the same amount of talking. You don't want the date to be focused on one person. Sometimes, just joking can break the ice that might form. The first date is nerve wrecking. In many cases, you don't know anything about the other person and so you are trying to dig for information without it seeming as you are trying to get too personal. So, men, make sure you aren't asking what sort of positions them like or if they would marry you. This isn't first date material either. Remembering these things can help you to find a comfortable topic to talk about.
