As President Barack Obama recently proclaimed March as Red Cross Month, it becomes quite naturally also the best time to search for opportunities to volunteer nonprofit for helping those in need. Many such opportunities are to be found with the American Red Cross and can be as diverse as teaching lifesaving skills, providing comfort or shelter to disaster victims, running blood drives, or helping humanitarian causes by collecting charity. Deciding to volunteer nonprofit at American Red Cross means essentially saving lives and can be a wonderful way of giving something back to the community who needs more capable hands.

Both nonprofit and for profit organizations offer opportunities for volunteering. The goal of the for profit organizations is to increase the financial gains of their owners and shareholders. Thus, all their profits will go to them. The goal of nonprofit organizations on the other hand is to support a cause and thus they will donate to that cause all the profits that they earn. The decision for which type of organization you would enlist is entirely a personal decision; the rewards you would reap depends of the choices you make.

Many people prefer to volunteer nonprofit as they consider that the aid in all its forms should go to the cause and should not be used in any way to increase financial gains of other people. The workforce of the American Red Cross consists mainly of volunteers. As most of the nonprofit volunteers, these people offer their efforts for the sake of helping, especially those who are most in need. While there is no financial gain for them in it, the volunteering experience and the thought of having to help out the less fortunate is quite often rewarding in itself.

After deciding to volunteer nonprofit, one still has to decide as to the concrete way in which to help. The American Red Cross offers a variety of services to people in need and one can choose for which service to volunteer nonprofit. Volunteers that would like to work in domestic settings could, for instance, teach people important survival skills such as first aid and CPR. Or they could go around the country to help collect blood donations. Should they prefer to work in international settings, they can instead apply to provide relief and help to family members separated by war. Or they could train communities in disaster preparedness.
Another important type of service is providing emotional support. Volunteering nonprofit can also mean simply listening to people in need and offering them comfort when needed. Such services are invaluable and they are just as important as any other relief services in case of victims of accidents or natural disasters. Volunteering is at its best when each person provides a service according to his or her own interests and strengths. When the desire to help is combined with skill and passion, volunteering can be indeed most rewarding and effective.

Indeed, the success of profit organizations could be measured by the monetary values. Volunteer nonprofit groups' rewards on the other hand, is far from something tangible, yet most people find it most satisfying.
