Many people want to join health-care industry as doctors; however, it is not always that easy since it requires extremely good grades and passing entry exam and it is not always possible for a person to fulfill these requirements. In such case when a person wants to join only the health-care industry as they find it a good opportunity to serve humanity, they can also consider other options; one of very appealing of which is choosing to be a phlebotomist. A phlebotomist is a person who deals with extracting blood from patients and forwarding it to the lab for test or donation purposes. It provides the candidate a very good opportunity to be a part of medical industry and serve humans. Responsibilities of a Phlebotomist For those who wish to become a phlebotomist following are a few responsibilities of a phlebotomist to help them know what they are required to do as phlebotomist: • Taking blood or blood samples from donors or patients. • Forwarding the blood samples, after keeping a track record, to the lab. • Dealing with all kinds of patients who may be fearful of giving blood. • Explaining to patients the whole procedure of taking and forwarding the blood and calming them down during the whole process (if they are not comfortable with it). • Ensuring equipment's sterilization and cleaning. • Preparing reagents or any other thing that comes as a standard task of blood taking and transfusing. • Taking patient's blood pressure reading before and after the procedure. • Record keeping: Patient's personal and health data and blood sample/tests specifications. How to become a phlebotomist If you have a high school diploma you can apply for phlebotomy accreditation. It is a nine month program after which the candidate needs to pass an exam. After being successful in the exam the candidate becomes a certified phlebotomist. Besides this nine month certification, you can also opt for 2 years or 4 years bachelors program in which a detailed course is taught to the candidates along with practical and the candidate after passing required exams becomes a degree holder too, which is definitely a plus point career wise. Moreover, you can even opt for a vocational phlebotomy training which also gives you the right to work as a phlebotomist in any hospital or clinic. Career Growth as a Phlebotomist Being a phlebotomist doesn't mean that you can only become a senior phlebotomist. It is quite possible that you grow in your career horizontally. You can switch to other posts like lab supervisors or any other role in admin for that matter, after gaining a little bit of relevant experience working as a phlebotomist. Moreover, you can even switch to technician side provided you have interest in that area. Thus there are many opportunities available to those who want to avail them. Phlebotomist Salaries No doubt, salary is one of the determining factors in choosing a career. Regardless of the fact that you have decided to become a phlebotomist to serve the humanity, importance of salary can't be overlooked. According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics average annual salary of a phlebotomist is $26,000 to $27,040. This is not too high but to start with, it is enough and there is a fair chance that with the increase in experience as a phlebotomist one can expect a pay raise. For those having 5 to 9 years of experience as a phlebotomist, salary range becomes $24,435 - $36,067 and for those having 10 to 19 years in this field, salary range becomes $26,348 - $35,889. Moreover, for 20 + years, one can expect to earn between $27,770 to $41,156. Moreover, salary range also varies with the choice of state for example, phlebotomist in San Antonio have a high salary range as compared to phlebotomist in Atlanta. Other than salaries, phlebotomist can also enjoy health insurances, paid sick leaves, retirement plan and other benefits depending upon their employer.
