What Are the Root Causes Terrorism?BY: Evelyn Lalisan | Category: Politics | Submitted: 2010-04-09 17:25:15
First you have to define what terrorism is. Terrorism may be referred to as an act of intimidation, violence and destruction causing severe damage and death. It is an act or campaign that causes fear, shock, panic, alarm and horror to a people or nation that experiences it. It may have another meaning for others depending on their beliefs, experiences and outside influences. Regardless of the meaning, another relevant issue is finding out the root causes of terrorism. So, what may be some of these root causes that start terrorism? People think there are rational and irrational reasons for terrorism. Still, most people incorporate terrorism with politics. It is presumed that those who are against a legitimate government's policies and laws may be a root cause of terrorism. Maybe so, but then maybe not because not all terrorism arise from diverse political views, grievances and opinions. If these political views and grievances are properly addressed by government, then the most likely the political problems would be solved. Terrorism affiliated with the religious factor may also be pointed as another root cause. But then as a matter of belief, the people who do this kind of terrorism acts look at their actions in a more meaningful way of transcending into the spiritual level. They believe that death and destruction are sacramental to their religious beliefs. The real root causes of terrorism are still up for debate. Opinions and ideas vary from people who claim expertise about the subject. There is always the psychological factor that may bring about terrorism, but there are other contributing factors as well. These factors may eventually lead to the formation of a group of people into a terrorist band. The most common factors stem from politics, culture, and religion. The issue of poverty is not a factor here; it is a misconception because terrorism does not begin because of poverty. In a more relevant case, terrorism may spring from a group that experiences many disadvantages and grievances because of their religion, ethnic or class. The leaders of these militant groups are surprisingly educated and may come from a higher class status. Politics and policies that bring about severe discontent among a group of people may often lay the ground for terrorist actions. The aims or motives of the group would somehow make some meaning as to why they have to do their terrorist acts. However, terrorism has undergone some changes. It can happen anywhere in all parts of the world. Before, terrorism was just limited to a local area where it could have started, but now it has gone outside of its local zone and has targeted areas out of its boundaries. In some cases, terrorism occurs in developing nations who may have some distrust to new methods of technology, new policies and even a way of life, that old traditions and conventional ways feel threatened by modernization. More developing or those nations going through some abrupt modernization are prone to terrorism acts because of cynicism, suspicions and doubts of some of their people against something unfamiliar and foreign to them. Yet, this does not mean that modernization causes terrorism, rather it is just a human trait to have a tendency to dislike changes and adapt new ways to some people in these developing nations. As to the religious factor, some fanatics use religion as a means to do terrorist acts. Different religions so many years ago have committed terrorist acts in the guise of religious convictions and beliefs such as Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and many others. In irony, no religion encourages murder, death and destruction. But then their kind of belief and ideology have been used as excuses to justify the kind of terrorism they did in the past and perhaps in the present times as well. The act of terrorism may come in various forms and may arise because of reasons that only the terrorists understand. How do you justify death and suffering as a means to get victory to whatever purpose the terrorism acts are aimed for? It just doesn't make sense.
