What Things to Toss and When From Your Home to Keep it HealthyBY: Evelyn Lalisan | Category: Health | Submitted: 2010-04-19 06:25:44
Your home is your safe haven. You do everything you can to make it a pleasant and clean one. Keeping it healthy as well must be a priority for you. Where do you start? Look around and learn which things around the house may cause some harmful effects to your family's health. Knowing these simple methods would ensure your home as a healthy home to live in for a long time. 1. Think pillows. These should be replaced on a yearly basis. If the pillows are damaged, soiled and have outlived their use, you must replace them with new ones. Your pillows have absorbed all of your body's hair and scents making them as good sources of bacteria or germs. You may use some good protective pillow covering if you want to prolong the usefulness of the pillows. 2. The mattress should likewise be replaced after about 5 to 7 years of use. If the mattress is soiled, damaged and deformed, then it has to be replaced at once. A damaged old mattress may result to some back pain and some sleeping problems. 3. If you have smoke alarms in your home, you must remember to change them after about 10 years. You may have to check the alarms on a monthly basis and change batteries annually. Keep in mind that these alarms were installed to keep your family and your home safe from fire; thus you must keep them in good and proper condition. 4. Air conditioners should be used till they have outlived their life. If you have proper maintenance and servicing for these units, then they could last till 15 years. Always check the filter preferably every six weeks especially during humid weather. If the filter is totally covered with dirt and you have difficulty cleaning it, then you might as well buy a new one. Keeping your air conditioners clean would help keep the air healthy for your family. 5. Vitamins should be tossed out after the expiration dates. If the vitamins don't have any expiry dates, try to remember when you bought them; if it was a year ago or more, you might as well dispose of these. It would be better to buy new ones than take the risk of taking expired vitamins. 6. Contact lens solutions should be tossed out after three months. Those which have seals that are damaged or broken should be discarded at once. Bacteria or germs may have contaminated the solutions making you more prone to infection. 7. The toothbrush should be replaced every 3 or 4 months. Worn out bristles are not effective to clean teeth anymore. Make sure to replace worn out bristles even before the 3 or 4 months period if needed to prevent infection to the teeth. 8. Make up which have been opened must be tossed away after 6 months. The eye liner, mascara and eye shadow applicators must be replaced within the 6 months period because these are prone to germs and bacteria in the air. Makeup like foundation can last up to 2 years, powder and lipstick may last till 3 years. 9. The anti-bacterial cream has to be tossed out of the home after a year. The length of time can make the cream less effective for proper use. 10. The fire extinguishers need to be discarded after about 10 years of use. These units may lose their pressure after so many years of being unused. If you have rechargeable units, you may choose to service them after six years or if the pressure in them are low. Of course, these are only some of the important things that you may need to be reminded of to make your home a safe and healthy one for your family. You may also look around the kitchen, laundry area and other areas of your home to check for things that need to be replaced or discarded. It is a matter of practically and common sense for you as a homemaker to make your home as safe and healthy as possible.
