When you volunteer as an adult, what do you teach your children? You might not know it, but you are teaching your children about a lot of things. When you do this, you find that your children grow up to be something special. So, what happens with this? Let's give you a bit of information as to what your children gain from this. They learn not only to think of themselves. They look at what others go through or the cause in which they are volunteering for and from this, they learn to put others first. In a society where we teach our children it's all about you and you alone, it's the parents job to make sure that they teach their children otherwise. If you don't, society will be able to teach them what they want and when they want. The other thing they learn is how others view them when they do this. They might think it's lame and other things, but you will find that they will locate people who really think this is a good thing. Others that they hang around might not find them the coolest, but when they stop to look at how those who really matter to them view them, they might change their attitude about it. You show them that your time could pay off. Sure, it looks good on college applications. However, they learn that when they give their time, things happen. It might be a house gets build for Habitat for Humanity. It might be that a woman is saved from her abusive husband. It might even be that a full stomach is given to a person wondering where there next meal might come from. It's a way to teach your children the value of good people. You will find that your kids will learn to value a good friendship. It is quite common for people who volunteer to create friendships with the people they serve as well as with those who serve with you. They can learn much from these people and often they find that these people give an impact on their life that no other person can give or leave. They learn to not take things for granted. When they do this, you will see that they value the things that you have given them in life. They take these things and cherish them, not the toys that so many other children value. This is something that means a lot in this day and age where technology is everyone's best friend. Last, it's a growing experience. It is said that those children who volunteer end up maturing at a greater rate than their peers. They stay out of trouble and have been able to help others of their peers who have said that they have had some dilemmas. When you notice this, you find that in the end, they are better off with the volunteering experience. This is what every parent aims for. Now, maybe it's your turn to encourage your children to do just that so that they have that in their life.
