For those working in an office, this is the place where they conduct their daily activity. They spend a lot of hours there every day and they interact with their colleagues. It is a place where one can make friends, but, unfortunately, it is the place where people can turn against each other and become enemies. Social conflicts always occur in a social group and, after a while, the employees that work together in an office can be called a social group. An office conflict is very likely to occur at some point or another and every business owner is aware of this. It is not a major problem as long as it appears because of professional disagreements. When it has personal causes or takes places because two strong personalities clash it can be threatening for the well being of the business. It can seriously affect the quality of people's work and their productivity.

The most common cause for an office conflict is competition which appears in offices with determined people who want to advance on the corporate ladder. Competition is encouraged among employees by the business owners because it is said to increase productivity and quality of work. People give their best when competing with a colleague. However, competition can become dangerous if it affects the employees' self- esteem or if it's too strong and makes the colleagues turn into enemies. Business owners have to pay special attention to these aspects and discourage competition the moment they notice it becomes dangerous. If this is the case, they should make their employees work together as a team. An office conflict will die if competition disappears and workers depend on each other for doing their work. Competition is a strong weapon as long as it used correctly.

A characteristic of capitalism is that competition is promoted both between business and individuals. This can have a negative impact on workers because they always considers themselves threaten and they always feel they should fight for something. When noticing that someone threatens his or hers position, a worker might use personal attacks to denigrate that person and to eliminate it from competition. It is then when the management should come in and solve the office conflict by directing the workers to a mature behavior and by imposing this to them. An office conflict can lead to personal assaults, so extra attention is needed in solving it.

Common respect and professionalism should be promoted among employees in order to avoid office conflicts. The company's policy should enable reporting conflicts and should guarantee impartial hearing of both sides. An open door policy is also welcomed. An office conflict should be correctly judged by the personnel department and fair solutions should be rendered to employees.

A code of conduct is compulsory in every company. It should be available to all employees and especially to new ones. Respect and professionalism at work is the key to avoid an office conflict and the management should take care of ensuring them.
