Where to Go? Which Car to Take? Well, There's Only One Answer Really.BY: Alessandro Saetta Vinci | Category: Travel | Submitted: 2011-04-06 02:34:39
As you might have noticed I'm fond of cars. I would drive to Australia if only I could, so whenever I go away, no matter where I go and no matter how many planes I've got to get to get there I always rent a car. I love cars, I love the feeling that a new car gives you, I love how a beautiful natural panorama or a city skyline just looks and feels better when admired from a convertible car. I love how you can always mistreat rental cars, I love speed and driving through corners, while shouting, at a million miles an hour, I love how a car starts when you tell it to, stops when you tell it to, it follows you. If you're on a bus, you have to stop where the route plan tells you to, if you're driving, any beach is fine, any mountain, any road is an excuse to just stop, lift the boot and eat some crisps while looking at a strange lizard-like "thing" in the desert. So, what I'd like to do with this piece is give you some consumer advice for your next trip abroad. Of course, you can't use buses, because they're dirty, sweaty, slow, bound by prefixed route plans and full of old people who snort and cough a lot. You can't use trains because of the same exact reasons and what's more, a train stops at a station, which means that afterwards you're gonna have to catch a bus as well. Bikes? Well yeah, except they tend to fall off one, and two, let's face it: you're not Eddie Merckx nor Valentino Rossi, perhaps you've got a bit of a belly which makes you look ridicolous and you're as fit as a wardrobe. BUT maybe I'm wrong, maybe you are a good biker and fit, BUT then again, what's the point of a holiday if you're not relaxing? So the obvious choice is still a car. Where to get one? And, more importantly, which one? Let's start with a suggestion: Sixt. Other car rental companies show you a picture of a Fiat 500 that goes from 60-70 $/€/£ per day, and give you a Hyunday I10 which will end up costing you 80. Sixt shows you a picture of a Ford Fiesta and gives you a Golf instead for the same price. Now, to the most important question of them all. Which car? Surely if you're rich you're spoilt for choice but what if you aren't? What if your pockets are empty? I'm sure that you will be tempted to go for the small and cheap car. A diesel perhaps?? I strongly advise against it, for a million reasons. One, they're not so cheap to run, two, they'll make you look poor and stupid, three, this is just one car you drive for a few days and then you give it back to the car rental company, so why not go for a good one? If you go to America a 5 miles long sedan (which is classified as a small car by the Americans) will cost you, roughly, 50 $ per day. A convertible Ford Mustang will cost anything from 60 to 70. You spend 10 % more money but get 80 % more car. May I suggest you, unless you're in Bolivia or something, avoid a 4x4, you won't be able to park it, won't get you any more ladies to undress quickly than you would with a Fiat and it will be "handsomely" expensive to run. Estates? People carriers? Not really, no. Unless you're on holiday with a family of 12000 people, that's a no-no. After all, it depends on the location as well. Well as a matter of a fact it pretty much all depends on the location. Seaside? A convertible. Las Vegas, Paris, London and all the other glamorous cities? A convertible. Mountains, creeks, the Italian or French hills or rivieras? Well, a convertible. Truth be told, the best choice is always a convertible, unless, that is, you go to cold places, such as Alaska or Canada or Norway or Sweden. In that case, get a convertible.
