There are many people who use writing as a job. However, you have to be very careful when you do this. If you are looking into writing for a living or for an extra income, here are some things you should be mindful of.

The first thing is that while many will tell you that you have to have a degree, this isn't the case. I'm writing and while I do have an Associate's degree, I don't have one in English. However, there is a downfall. This doesn't give you easy access into writing for newspapers and so forth.

There are some things that you should have on hand. Now, you might be saying great, money I have to spend, but you can take this off your taxes as freelancing can be considered a form of a business. You should have stamps and envelopes on hand. Sometimes when you submit things that you have written to a place, they might ask you to include a SASE. This is a self addressed stamped envelope. So, you want to be sure that you have those laying around because you might not know when you are going to send one in.

Another thing you need to remember is that the books called Writers Market which are put out each year can be your friend. Here you can see who is looking for work, how much they pay, and how they like submissions. Only until then will you have the faintest idea as where to send.

Now, there are some writers out there who write for websites or individuals. They will pay less, but if you apply yourself , you could write for up to ten people if not more and have a good amount of money coming in to pay off some bills. That's what I do. There are sites like Guru.com that you can check out and bid on jobs. You bid on them like contractors bid on work. It's rather simple.

Some of you are wondering how you go about to get paid. I have a Paypal account. Some of the ones that you write for will have it that you have an account that when you bid on projects, it goes there and then you can have it deposited to your bank or to Paypal or you can request a check. For those where you send them to a magazine, they always pay in a check. With Paypal though, you can link it to your bank account and deposit the money there. However, it takes three to seven business days. We prefer the method of getting a debit card through paypal.

All of this is things that you need to know to make it when you write. There are other things you should know, but this is the general idea. Now, you can see if this is something that you think you would like. Try it out and see if it's something for you.
