"Man Bites Dog." The title itself can bring to mind many different feelings and expectations, depending on where you read it. The genre of the piece makes all the difference in the readers' response to it. Likewise, any time you begin to write something, the intended genre will bring with it different rules, guidelines, and expectations.

"Man Bites Dog: a look at how society is turning on its head."

The first set of genres that we will look at is commentaries. These are most often found in magazines and blogs. A commentary is written with the assumption that the author is giving his or her opinion. However, it is more than just a rant or rave. These opinions are based on specific situations and facts that can be verified. Once the author cites the facts that he or she is working with, the rest is his/her conclusions and theories based on those facts. The veracity of these ideas is not the primary focus; the primary focus is stating what the writer believes to be true and attempting to bring others to his/her point of view. In this case, "Man Bites Dog" refers to the reversal of the assumed and expected "Dog Bites Man" headline.

"Man Bites Dog and Other Topsy Turvey Tales"

This headline starts the reader on a journey through fictional short stories. Short stories follow a plot line, have the elements of any story (introducing the character, settings, and situation; conflict; resolution), and are generally character-focused. There are many different kinds of storytelling and sub-genres: fantasy, horror, historical fiction, et cetera. Each of these sub-genres bring with them different expectations and assumptions for the readers. Short stories are joined in the larger creative writing genre by poems, and long stories or novels. This is perhaps the most creative genre, as readers expect to be taken into worlds, societies, and creatures that do not exist in our world. This can be tricky; however, as even with this freedom, readers expect to be entering into a world that has its own rules, boundaries, and limitations. By making sure that the story you create follows a set of rules, your creativity will be likely to be accepted by readers.

"Man Bites Dog: After incident with stolen steak, a man in the South Bay decided to take matters into his own hands."

The last headline that we are faced with is one that is grounded in truth. This headline is used for journalism, business, and research. Each of these genres is based primarily on the transmission of information. The writers take their time to ensure that their pieces can be verified and are accurate, and yet that they still engage a readers' interest. However, the kind of reader dictates the way that this is accomplished. For research papers, the intended audience is most likely a company or professionals in a certain specialty. For this reason, research writers can assume that their audience has a specific base of knowledge coming into the article, and can spend more time on the content instead of on background. Another genre in this area is journalism. The primary role of journalism is to report information. However, because journalists are people with their own interests and biases, it has become difficult to find a truly unbiased new source. In this case, it is important to also know the sub-genre within journalism (for example, some new outlets tend to be left- or right-leaning when it comes to their political agendas).
